Entering the Erongo Mountain Belt

As you approach the foothills of Erongo, the terrain rises into a dramatic ring of towering granite domes and volcanic outcrops. These are remnants of an ancient collapsed volcano. Huge boulders, deep ochre granite walls, and resilient desert vegetation define the landscape. Hornbills and rock kestrels may circle above the cliffs, while roadside pullouts provide easy opportunities for short photo stops and wide views.

Hike & Rock Art at Phillips Cave

The trail to Phillips Cave is a scenic, moderately easy walk through open plains and acacia trees, gradually rising toward the granite hills. The natural rocky path includes a few smooth granite sections to scramble over. Inside the shallow cavern, see the famous White Elephant painting along with human figures, animal depictions, and symbolic shapes created by the San thousands of years ago. The wide granite overhang also opens to peaceful views across the plains.

Arrive at Spitzkoppe Reserve

Spitzkoppe is a massive granite peak rising sharply from the desert plains of Namibia, often called the Matterhorn of Namibia because of its dramatic shape. Formed more than 120 million years ago, it rises roughly 700 metres above the surrounding landscape and is framed by rounded boulders, arches, desert vegetation, and ancient San rock art sites. Its silhouette and changing light make it one of the country’s most recognizable natural landmarks.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tour self-drive or guided?

Both are possible. Travel in a rental 4×4 independently, or ask our team to arrange a guided version. The final itinerary and services are confirmed in your personalized quotation.

Do I need a 4×4 for this itinerary?

We recommend a suitable 4×4 for the gravel-road sections. Sensitive areas such as Sandwich Harbour and guided desert elephant tracking must be visited with the appropriate specialist operator, not independently in the rental vehicle.

Are accommodation, park fees and activities included?

Inclusions depend on the quotation you select. Accommodation, entry fees, fuel, vehicle hire, and third-party excursions should be checked against the final written quotation before booking.

Can the five-day itinerary be customized?

Yes. Add extra nights, choose different accommodation or activities, and adjust the pace to suit your preferred dates.

Will we definitely see desert elephants or other wildlife?

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Movement, conditions and seasons vary; your local guide will choose an appropriate approach that respects the animals.
